2. Jacksonville Jaguars

First Round Picks in 2020 NFL Draft: No. 9, No. 20

Whenever the Jacksonville Jaguars were going to the AFC Championship Game with Blake Bortles as their quarterback — a thing that is still almost unbelievable that it actually happened — it was on the back of their defense. And one of the critical pieces in that defensive effort was linebacker Telvin Smith.

However, as we watched the Jags defense take a step back in 2018 and then fall off in the 2019 season, Smith was also a factor, especially this past season. The do-it-all linebacker elected to sit out the 2019 campaign and his return remains in question. That means the Jaguars have a crucial hole in their defense lingering and needing to be filled.

Lucky for Jacksonville, Simmons is the perfect type of player to take over for what Smith did and not only fill the void but perhaps do it even better than his predecessor did. He has the same hybrid type frame that breeds elite speed in the middle of the field to defend sideline-to-sideline against the run and pass and offers the versatility to move him around in the defense.

Simmons being mocked to the Jaguars has been quite popular for the past few months and for good reason. Sitting at the No. 9 overall pick, the Jaguars are going to be in perfect position for Simmons to fall to them and, if he’s there, you’d be hard-pressed to find a player that this team needs more than the Clemson product.
