Miami Dolphins lay cornerstones of rebuild in 7-round 2020 mock draft
By Lucas Schuh
Outside of Xavien Howard, the Dolphins’ cornerback group leaves a lot to be desired. And even Howard’s play can be rough, at times, due to his extreme aggressiveness and riskiness. Nik Needham played surprisingly well after being brought onto the active roster, but he clearly still needs development and isn’t a guarantee to be a future asset in Miami. Cameron Dantzler, subsequently, could be a player to help the Dolphins defense moving forward.
One distinction that Dantzler holds over most of the top-tier cornerbacks in the 2020 NFL Draft class is he wasn’t burned by the prolific LSU offense and Joe Burrow. Beyond that, however, he’s also an extremely talented defensive back.
Dantzler is one of the best press-man cornerbacks in the 2020 draft class as he displays terrific patience to go with outstanding length. He’s also effective at attacking the catch point, once again utilizing his length to excel in that area and displaying terrific ball skills when the pass is in the air. His physical tools also allow him to be effective in zone coverage as well.
The one thing that will scare some NFL teams about Dantzler, however, is the way he measures in. At 6-2 and a rail-thin 185 pounds, the Mississippi State product could possibly get pushed around early in his career as he needs to get stronger. However, his stickiness in man coverage and his frame make him an intriguing pick at the end of the first round. He could be a fantastic fit opposite of the aggressive Howard in the Miami secondary.
Other Players Available: Damon Arnette, Kenneth Murray, Justin Jefferson
