Miami Dolphins lay cornerstones of rebuild in 7-round 2020 mock draft
By Lucas Schuh
When you look a the Dolphins group of wide receiver, they all have one thing in common: almost every player in the group are physical, contested-catch receivers that don’t possess great ability to run after the catch.
Since DeVante Parker arrived in the NFL and even since his days in college, his calling card has always been his ability to win in 50-50 situations and down the field. After the catch, however, he doesn’t offer much. The same can be said of Preston Williams, who shined as an undrafted free agent this past season before he succumbed to injury. But again, Miami needs players who can create after they get the rock.
Brandon Aiyuk is the antithesis of Parker and Williams in that regard. When the wid receiver arrived at Arizona State, he lived in relative obscurity as N’Keal Harry was the focal point of the Sun Devils offense. But in 2019, he became “the guy” for Herm Edwards‘ offense and showed he may be the better option between him and Harry.
Aiyuk is a freaky-quick athlete who can burn defensive backs down the field by getting separation, even if he didn’t display elite speed at the NFL Combine. Moreover, he’s a beast with the ball in his hands as he displays phenomenal vision in the open field to see holes in addition to making guys miss.
While Tagovailoa was at Alabama, he had dynamic receivers that could create after the catch. Aiyuk isn’t Jeudy, Ruggs or any of the Bama wideouts but he does bring some of the same qualities that helped make Tua successful. While he could struggle with press coverage and may be forced to move to the slot primarily, he can be a deadly weapon in the screen game and with vertical shots down the field.
