NFL Free Agency 2020: 5 Teams that should tender an offer for Austin Ekeler
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Like the Falcons, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers also need some reinforcements at the running back position. Many rumors have circulated that they could pursue Melvin Gordon in free agency or acquire David Johnson from Arizona, but I believe Ekeler would be a better fit in the Buccaneers system.
The Buccaneers boasted the 24th worst rushing offense in 2019. Incumbent Ronald Jones was serviceable as a runner last season, but his 31 receptions for 309 yards left much to be desired. Peyton Barber was also quite ineffective, as he averaged 3.1 yards per carry and 7.2 yards per reception. While head coach Bruce Arians has maintained his commitment to his running back group, I find it hard to believe he would pass up the opportunity to upgrade his backfield.
Ekeler would be a solid addition to an offense that already ranked first in passing yardage in 2019 and succeeds by throwing the ball 40 times per game. He would be a reliable option for Jameis Winston out of the backfield and could prevent his quarterback from forcing the ball downfield when no options are available.
Ekeler would be a safety valve for Winston, whether he catches balls in the flat or works his way downfield against a linebacker. His small frame and shifty running style would suit a team that likes to spread out the defense and create one-on-one matchups.
The Buccaneers have nearly $85 million in cap space and can assuredly outbid the Chargers for Ekeler’s services. Ekeler may cost Tampa Bay a draft selection, but he would be worth the price as the young running back would be more polished than any rookie runner the Buccaneers could afford with their 45th overall selection.
Adding Ekeler to a unit that already boasts Chris Godwin, Mike Evans and O.J. Howard could make this offense elite and help them secure a playoff berth for the first time since 2007.
