Winner: Kyle Dugger, S, Lenoir-Rhyne

Perhaps the buzziest name of Combine week among the defensive backs was Division II product Kyle Dugger. There was a ton of hype that he was going to blow up the athletic testing and, though his 40 time might not have been what he hoped for (4.49 seconds), everything else was phenomenal.

He led all defensive backs with a monster 42-inch vertical and was beastly with a 11-foot-2 broad jump. It’s clear he’s going to be a top-50 pick (or right in that range) with the hype that’s growing daily.

Winner: Tanner Muse, S, Clemson

Tanner Muse was a player who, on film, looked as if he might be heading towards a role as a linebacker. After the way he tested on Sunday, however, that might not be the case as he tore things up in Indy. The 6-2, 227-pounder turned a lot of heads with a 4.41-second time in the 40, 34.5-inch vertical and decent enough 10-foot-4 broad jump. With that size and explosiveness, he’ll at least get an NFL shot at safety.

Winner: Darnay Holmes, CB, UCLA

Health has been a longtime concern for Darnay Holmes but, when he was healthy for UCLA, he showed a ton of good things. Testing well would be huge for him, though, showing NFL teams he still has his physical gifts. That’s what he precisely did at the NFL Combine.

Running a 4.48-second 40-yard dash was big for Holmes but he was also fantastic in the drills. He showed terrific footwork and hip flexion when moving around on the field and it’ll be a stunner if the former Bruin is available after the top 75 picks.

Loser: Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama

Xavier McKinney is the top safety in the 2020 NFL Draft for most people and rightfully so. The film at Alabama shows a player who can do it all on the back end of a defense and do so at a high level. His NFL Combine showing, however, was less than ideal.

Running the 40 in 4.63 seconds was not what you wanted to see, even if his jumps were fine. Furthermore, McKinney was nothing more than there for the drills. There’s been speculation that he wasn’t 100 percent healthy on Sunday and hopefully so because he looked like a lesser athlete than we’ve seen in Tuscaloosa.
