Minnesota Vikings: 4 Top targets in 2020 NFL free agency
With NFL free agency right around the corner, here are four targets the Minnesota Vikings could zero in on during the signing period.
The Minnesota Vikings managed to return to the playoffs during the 2019 season, making a run as deep as the NFC Divisional Round before falling to the San Francisco 49ers that ultimately ended their season. Going into the offseason before a new year can kick off with 2020 NFL free agency, Minnesota has an incredibly important offseason ahead of them.
The Vikings go into the offseason sitting in a tough situation when it comes to their salary cap situation, which might ultimately result in a large amount of personnel changes on both sides of the ball for the purple and gold.
According to Spotrac, Minnesota has just $736,000 in salary-cap space prior to the start of the free agency period on March 18. While they still have some needs and holes to fill ahead of the 2020 campaign, the Vikings could shed some contracts within its current roster and look to both the free-agent market and the upcoming NFL Draft to address those needs.
With Minnesota’s front office preparing for who will hit the market and who they will try and go after ahead of the 2020 campaign, let’s take a look at four targets specifically in the free agent pool that the Vikings could aim to go after this offseason.
4. Trevor Siemian
One area that the Minnesota Vikings are going to have to look in addressing this offseason is at the backup quarterback position behind Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins. A familiar face and potential target Minnesota could look towards is quarterback Trevor Siemian, who has spent time with the Vikings during his five-year NFL career.
Siemian, who wrapped up the 2019 season as a backup quarterback for the New York Jets, spent time in Minnesota during the 2018 campaign before leaving prior to the start of last season.
The 28-year-old quarterback could be a cheap option that the Vikings could look at trying to sign this offseason while they look to add to their quarterback group on the depth chart. Given Minnesota’s tough salary cap situation, this addition and the fact that Siemian would likely be a cheap addition could make this an intriguing move.
When it comes to Siemian, he is an individual that the organization is already familiar with and the two sides could try and reunite going into the upcoming 2020 season.
The quarterback broke into the league in 2015 with the Denver Broncos and ended up playing three seasons with the Broncos before coming to Minnesota in 2018. During his lone year with the Vikings, Siemian didn’t appear in a regular-season contest for the purple and gold, but he has the capability to step in for Cousins if needed.
A season ago with the Jets, Siemian appeared in one game for New York, totaling six passing attempts while converting on three of those attempts to finish with three passing yards.
Siemian hasn’t really had an opportunity to take the field over the last few years while primarily serving as a backup quarterback, but that is exactly what Minnesota is looking for to possibly fill into that role heading into the 2020 campaign.
