Ahead of free agency, the New Orleans Saints have a few guys they need to lockdown. In particular, these five should be their top priority to re-sign.

The Super Bowl is not far out of the reach of the New Orleans Saints. Despite the past two years being a disappointment, 2020 could very well be their year. Even though free agency hasn’t started yet, no doubt the team has a plan in place. Before getting ahead of themselves though, the Saints need to make sure that they re-sign the guys who will help them win and let the others go.

In a lot of ways, the Saints have an embarrassment of riches. Offensively, they’re one of the strongest teams in the league. After they gave Michael Thomas a huge contract last year, he went on to break records. It was truly amazing watching him.

While it’s doubtful that any of the players they re-sign will do that, it’s something to keep in mind. Either way, it’s something that the front office has to think about when they’re re-signing these guys. And in terms of who they should re-sign with the Super Bowl in their sights, these five players fit the bill.

5. Drew Brees

The first player to make the list is none other than Drew Brees. Of course, he’d be the player to start with. Last month, Brees posted that he would be returning for the 2020 season as a member of the New Orleans Saints.

That shut down all of the talks of him going elsewhere or possibly making a run with another team. Even so, it means that the Saints have to come up with a new contract for him.

There are a million reasons why the Saints are re-signing Brees. It’s hard to pinpoint just one, but as mentioned previously, the Super Bowl plays a huge role. Brees has been in the trenches with the team for years and he deserves another ring. He won his last in 2010 and still only has disappointment to show for it.

Additionally, Brees is arguably the best quarterback the Saints have ever had and they would be stupid to let him go elsewhere. Even though it’s not going to happen, it’s a shuttering thought for any franchise.

Overall, re-signing Drew Brees should be the team’s highest priority. His play on-the-field dictates that as he came back from injury and dominated. It was truly a sight to behold and at 41 years old, he deserves it.

The Saints definitely need to make room for these other four players, but Brees should be the first one they re-sign. He’s proven his greatness time and time again so the Saints should reward him for that. This might be an obvious place to start, but resigning Brees can put everything else in motion.
