Chicago Bears: 5 Top targets in 2020 NFL free agency
1. Brandon Scherff, OG
Okay, so this was a tough one to decide. What most people think will happen is that the Chicago Bears draft an offensive guard early to replace the retired Kyle Long. As I mentioned, however, Pace usually hits us with surprises with his moves. This could be one of them.
Reports have Pace making some kind of splash in free agency. The Bears have been linked to Hooper and a boatload of veteran quarterbacks to give Trubisky a push.
Everyone is in agreement that the Bears need to shore up the offensive line as well. Replacing Long is extremely important. The line needs a player with the passion and leadership skills he had. Without Long on the line, something was missing. The line didn’t have that alpha male pushing them so they seemed lost. The Bears need that guy who can put everyone in line and elevate their play.
If the Bears want to make a true splash (other than signing Tom Brady) is signing the top offensive guard in free agency. Brandon Scherff is one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL and having him on the line in Chicago would greatly improve its play. He is a tough, nasty player who could do for the offense what Khalil Mack did for the defense.
Mack came in and everyone fell into place behind him. The defense got a notch better just by seeing his work ethic.
Scherff can do the same for the offense. Many people were frustrated with the offensive line’s play. If the line cannot open holes for running back David Montgomery or protect Trubisky then a morale problem arises. Scherff can come in, work hard and has the resume to lead his line to play better.
Once that happens, Montgomery has holes to run through and do his thing and Trubisky has the time to hit open receivers. Then this becomes a good offense that scores points and that results in more wins.
We saw what one man can do to improve a team. Mack did it for the defense and Scherff can do it for the offense. It’ll be difficult to do it but if Pace can get it done he should do what he can to get it done.
