Detroit Lions: T.J. Hockenson

While I know T.J. Hockenson was a top-ten pick in last year’s draft and is one of the more well-known names on this list, I still believe he is tremendously underrated given he was unable to produce impressive numbers in his first year with the Detroit Lions. Much of it is not his fault, as his starting quarterback missed multiple games this year. Nonetheless, I can see a second-year breakout from the budding star.

Hockenson immediately jumped into the starting lineup and impressed early on. In his first game versus Arizona, he caught six balls for 131 yards and one touchdown. He slowed down after that, only managing 26 more catches for 236 yards and one touchdown in his 11 remaining games. He suffered a season-ending injury in his Thanksgiving contest versus Chicago.

Hockenson should see greater opportunity and consistency next season as he develops a full offseason of rapport with Matt Stafford. He was utilized throughout the formation, playing time in-line, in the slot, and even on the outside. He also excelled running downfield routes, as he had the 15th highest downfield targets among tight ends.

Hockenson was drafted to be the next George Kittle, but he was mostly nonexistent following his incredible Week 1 performance. I think he is flying too low under the radar and could have a breakout performance in his sophomore campaign.
