Every NFL team’s most underrated offensive weapon entering 2020
Green Bay Packers: Jace Sternberger
With the various reports circulating that the Green Bay Packers could potentially target Austin Hooper in free agency, I thought it would be wise to mention they selected an up-and-coming tight end in last year’s draft. While adding reinforcements to a unit that featured 33 year-old Jimmy Graham and 35-year-old Marcedes Lewis is not a bad idea, they shouldn’t forget about Jace Sternberger
The Packers drafted Sternberger out of Texas A&M in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. The young tight end missed the first ten games of the 2019 season with an ankle injury and didn’t catch a ball in the remaining games of the regular season; however, he became more featured during the playoffs.
Sternberger caught three balls for fifteen yards and a touchdown over his two postseason contests, as the Packers started featuring the rookie more often to spell the aging Graham. While he didn’t play a sizable role in 2019, he should be able to compete for the starting job next season with Graham and Lewis potentially on the outs in Green Bay.
Sternberger’s 6-4, 250-pound frame should give Aaron Rodgers a viable red-zone target and mismatch over the middle of the field. He is a talented blocker and adept route-runner, so he should find his way onto the field more often in his second season. The Packers should still add to the tight end room, but Sternberger could surprise next season.
