New Orleans Saints: Deonte Harris

The New Orleans Saints didn’t really need multiple weapons to succeed in 2019. Michael Thomas, Jared Cook and Alvin Kamara were able to sufficiently carry the load even when Drew Brees missed time. While many expected TreQuan Smith to make a second-year jump and Latavius Murray to fill the “Mark Ingram role,” neither were able to meet their expectations.

Yet, the Saints do have a solid receiver in the fold who I believe could be a viable weapon in the offense next year. And no, it’s not Taysom Hill. Deonte Harris, the undrafted receiver out of Assumption, played a minuscule role in the offense in 2019. He only managed six receptions for 24 yards and four rush attempts for 31 yards.

His primary value came on special teams, where he was a dynamic returner on both punts and kickoffs. While he wasn’t able to return any kicks for touchdowns, he did help establish great field position for New Orleans and force multiple missed tackles.

Harris is a quick, multifaceted receiver who should see more touches on screens and end-arounds in his second season with New Orleans. He probably won’t crack the starting lineup any time soon, but he could be a suitable gadget player for Sean Payton and generate some big plays in 2020.
