Every NFL team’s most underrated offensive weapon entering 2020
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Justin Watson
While most NFL fans were mesmerized (or traumatized) by Jameis Winston throwing over 30 touchdowns as well as 30 interceptions, it was easy to miss how deep the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were at receiver. While Mike Evans and Chris Godwin both surpassed 1,000 yards and became one of the most exciting receiver tandems in the NFL, the other wideouts on the depth chart showed some promise as well.
While I thought about including Breshad Perriman on this list, he may be leaving Tampa Bay in free agency. So, I went with my second choice and included Justin Watson, who saw a majority of his playing time come after Evans, Godwin, and Scott Miller went down with season-ending injuries. Watson took over as the No. 2 wideout behind Perriman and did rather well with increased opportunity.
In Watson’s last four games, he averaged six targets per game; he caught 14 balls for 146 yards and two touchdowns with Winston slinging the ball on nearly every down. He was a solid route runner and ranked in the 92nd percentile in terms of catch-radius. At 6-2, Watson was a big option over the middle of the field that could make contested catches.
Watson may not crack the starting lineup next season, as the Buccaneers have too much talent at the receiver position already. Yet, his skillset and 2019 production should allow the Buccaneers to pursue other positions of need in free agency and avoid spending major capital on another wide receiver. If Godwin goes down again, Watson should be able to fill-in and keep the chains moving.
