Every NFL team’s most underrated offensive weapon entering 2020
Tennessee Titans: Jonnu Smith
The Tennessee Titans were one of the most shocking teams of 2019. Derrick Henry led the league in rushing yards, A.J. Brown led all rookies in receiving yards, and former backup Ryan Tannehill guided his team to an AFC Championship game. While these players weren’t unknown by any means, they exceeded all expectations with their performances.
One player flying under the radar for 2020 is tight end Jonnu Smith. Smith came into the 2019 season projected to play behind incumbent veteran Delanie Walker, who had been a consistent factor at the tight end position for many years with the 49ers and Titans. However, after injuries hampered Walker and forced him to miss the remainder of the season, Smith got a chance to take the lead role.
Smith performed quite well, catching 35 balls for 439 yards and three touchdowns, averaging an impressive 12.5 yards per catch. He was also used on end rounds, running four times for 78 yards. Smith’s 4.62 speed, as well as his impressive catch radius, could allow him to make a larger impact next season with a full year as the TE1 for Tennessee.
He likely won’t break out to become an elite tight end, but he will be an underrated contributor who could be heavily relied upon by the Titans’ quarterback next year. Smith should see a steady rise in production as he assumes a featured role in this offense next season.
