2. New York Giants

New York’s pass rush lived and died with Markus Golden last season. The soon-to-be free agent recorded ten of the team’s 36 sacks. He was the only player to record more than five sacks for the Giants. Between losing Golden and former Pro Bowl defensive end, Leonard Williams the Giants need players capable of getting after opposing quarterbacks.

The Giants are not in a position to land a high-ranking edge rusher in the NFL Draft either. Barring some crazy trades, Chase Young will get picked in the top three selections, and no other edge rusher is worthy of New York’s fourth overall pick. If the Giants want an anchor for the pass rush, they will turn toward free agency.

With their $73,991,301 in cap space, the Giants should have their pick of edge rushers. They could even re-sign Golden if they believe the 2019 breakout star can produce consistently.

1. Houston Texans

The trio of Clowney, Whitney Mercilus, and J.J. Watt gave the Texans one of the most-threatening defensive fronts for years. In 2018, the group accumulated the bulk of Houston’s 43 sacks, which tied the team for the eleventh-most in the league. This past season, without Clowney, the Texans registered 31 sacks, tied for the sixth-fewest.

With Watt continuously struggling with injuries and Mercilus posting inconsistent numbers season to season, the Texans could use another pass-rushing specialist. Even though Fowler doesn’t match Clowney’s freakish abilities in pass coverage or against the run, he gives the Texans a legitimate third pass rusher.
