2. Derek Carrier, TE

It was a banner year for the tight end spot in the Raiders offense, particularly with the breakout season from Darren Waller. The ultra-talented converted wide receiver finally realized his immense potential as he led the team in receiving with 90 receptions (on 117 targets) for 1,145 yards, though he shockingly only had three touchdowns on the season.

Beyond Waller, though, 2019 rookie Foster Moreau also made his presence felt, particularly in the red zone. The big man had only 21 catches for 174 yards on the season but caught five touchdowns and improved as a blocker for Josh Jacobs as the year went on. The latter part, however, is what could spell the end for veteran tight end Derek Carrier.

Carrier has spent the last two seasons with the silver and black and, as a pass-catcher, really hasn’t brought much to the table. In 32 games played, he has only 20 catches for 175 yards and two touchdowns. With Waller and Moreau showing their prowess in that regard, Carrier’s main asset is his ability as a blocker. But with Moreau coming along there, his value is diminished further.

While Carrier is under contract for the 2020 season, his salary is not guaranteed. As such, Las Vegas can save $1.85 million while incurring no dead cap penalty by cutting Carrier. With the emergence of two younger, more effective players at the position, it’d be shocking to see the Raiders not value the money saved more than the player.
