Chicago Bears: 5 Under-the-radar free agent targets in 2020
3. Ereck Flowers
If you’d told me that Ereck Flowers might be a good choice for the Chicago Bears offensive line a couple of years ago I’d thought you were crazy. I regularly saw him play in Miami and noticed how he just tried to take advantage of his size and not really work at his craft. When the New York Giants drafted him in the first round (ninth overall) of the 2015 draft, I knew they made a mistake.
The Giants had a tough time with Flowers. He committed 13 penalties in 2016. In 2018, the Giants cut him. The Jacksonville Jaguars picked him up but it was more of the same.
Washington signed him to a one-year contract in 2019 and moved him over to guard because of injuries along the line. There he flourished. He looked more comfortable and started all 16 games and was in on 100 percent of the offensive snaps. Additionally, he only committed four penalties.
The Bears could decide to stay away from the big contract that Scherff would command. They could also decide to use their early picks on other areas and not on guard. If they do, Flowers could be a steal.
With that year of playing guard under his belt, Flowers would be more comfortable playing there. He is still just 26 years old and could finally be reaching his peak both physically and mentally. That would be a great reward for the Chicago Bears and the offense.
