Green Bay Packers: 5 Realistic free agents still available to target
By Joe Kipp
1. Taylor Gabriel, WR
Signing receiver Taylor Gabriel, who just turned 29 years old in February, makes sense from both a need and a value standpoint. He won’t be too expensive to sign, and the Packers are in desperate need of a playmaker on the other side of Davante Adams. Add in the fact that Gabriel spent time with Packers coach Matt LaFleur on the Atlanta Falcons in 2016, and this could be a sneaky good addition.
Ever since the departure of Randall Cobb, the Packers have lacked a quick-twitched receiver in their offense. The 5-7, 170-pound Gabriel would play a similar role to how Cobb was utilized. He’d allow LaFleur to use some creative play designs with manufactured touches in the form of end-arounds, quick screens and jet sweeps. Gabriel could also serve as a decoy on end-arounds and would get opposing defenses flowing the wrong way.
Gabriel went undrafted in 2014 and spent the last two years with the Chicago Bears, where he tallied 96 catches for 1,041 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He could likely be signed for at a cheaper rate than other flashy names on the open market like Emmanuel Sanders and Robby Anderson. The one concern with Gabriel is his recent history of concussions.
