Scouting Report. OT. Iowa. Tristan Wirfs. player. Pick Analysis. 4. 31

Dave Gettleman has taken a lot of heat as the general manager of the New York Giants. He’s already considered an old-school GM and that was reinforced when he used the No. 2 overall pick on a running back in 2018.

In his defense, the pick was Saquon Barkley who is no ordinary running back. But those who hated the move said they would still struggle on offense even with him, and here they are picking fourth overall which proves that thought process was correct.

He took even more heat for trading Odell Beckham, Jr. to the Cleveland Browns and then drafting Daniel Jones at No. 6. As for the OBJ trade, Beckham wasn’t the same player last season and the Giants ended up with a starting safety in Jabrill Peppers and took Dexter Lawrence at No. 17 — who is another starter.

Jones also started to prove he was worthy of the pick as he came on strong as a rookie. He still has a lot to work on but was good enough for the G-Men to move on from Eli Manning in order to start him going forward. With Jones set as the quarterback, Gettleman now just needs to make sure he’s comfortable in their offense. The best way to ensure that is to fix their issues at offensive tackle.

They do exactly that by taking Tristan Wirfs, the Iowa product who wowed everyone at the Combine. His addition can help the Giants move on from one of their previous additions that have yet to pan out. They most likely will move on from Nate Solder but could also shift him to guard to fill another hole. Wirfs addition simply gives them some much-needed options.
