Las Vegas Raiders: 3 Big-name free agents team could still sign
1. RB Devonta Freeman
Realistically, the Raiders don’t need a running back. They’ve got the starting gig covered with Josh Jacobs, who is coming off a sensational rookie season. Behind him, Jalen Richard serves as a quality do-it-all back who can serve as a spot starter in a pinch.
These days, though, NFL teams need more than two quality running backs. With how often injuries occur and players get worn down at the position, it just makes sense to have options — both as fallback plans and as rotational pieces who can keep the top dog from getting to bruised and battered.
So why not take a flier on Devonta Freeman?
Sure, he’s coming off a miserable 2019 season. So much so that the Atlanta Falcons simply showed him the door this offseason — remember, that was before they knew they’d be signing Todd Gurley. Freeman may have been outplayed by a relatively unknown Ito Smith last year, but that doesn’t erase the fact that he was an explosive back not that long ago.
The best part is Freeman could likely be paid for a huge discount. After a disastrous 2019 campaign, he’ll simply take what’s offered in hopes of keeping his career afloat. The Raiders have enough money to bring him aboard with an opportunity to earn a 1B role to Jacob’s 1A.
It’s another low-risk, high-reward option.
