Dallas Cowboys: 5 Wide receivers to target outside of Round 1 in 2020 NFL Draft
By Randy Gurzi
4. Joe Reed, Virginia
This is a pick that makes a lot of sense because Joe Reed was more than just a decent receiver at Virginia, he was also a sensational return man.
While Dallas did add Tony Pollard last season, who can also return kicks, it’s never a bad idea to have multiple players who can help on special teams. Not only that, but should they ever figure out how to use Pollard better on offense, they might not want to risk him on kick returns.
As for Reed, he’s built just like a running back — and was converted from that position to receiver — and can handle the punishment a slot receiver often takes. Coming into the Scouting Combine, Reed measured in at an even 6-0 and 224 pounds. He ran a respectable 4.47-second time in the 40-yard dash but he moves even quicker than that on tape.
Reed also proved at the Combine that he has plenty of strength as he recorded 21 reps in the bench press. That, paired with his running back background, helps him shed tackles and pick up the ever-important extra-yardage.
In his collegiate career, Reed had 1,465 yards receiving and 16 touchdowns, as well as another 172 yards, rushing with another score. His biggest impact was still as a returner, finishing his four-year career with 3,042 yards and five touchdowns as a kick returner.
The best part about targeting Reed is that he should be available in the late rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft. That would mean that Dallas can address many other needs early and still find a contributor on the third day.
