Dallas Cowboys: 5 Wide receivers to target outside of Round 1 in 2020 NFL Draft
By Randy Gurzi
1. K.J. Hamler, Penn State
No player in the 2020 NFL Draft makes more sense on the current Dallas Cowboys roster than Penn State speedster K.J. Hamler. He stands just 5-9 and weighed in at only 178 pounds but don’t let that lull you to sleep on him. Hamler is lightning in a bottle and, on a strong receiving corps, he can be the threat Stephen Jones once thought Tavon Austin would be.
Hamler can line up in the slot and while he won’t have the ability to break tackles that some of the other prospects do — or that Randall Cobb could — he can break games wide open with his legs. As a freshman for the Nittany Lions, Hamler averaged 18 yards per catch on 42 receptions then had 16.1 as a junior while hauling in 56 passes.
Like a couple of the other names on this list, Hamler can also be a player in the return game. He finished with over 1,200 return yards on punts and kickoffs for Penn State. Again, this is an area Dallas could use a lot of help in and Hamler making Hamler a versatile weapon for them.
Like with Brandon Aiyuk, the question is whether or not the team would like to spend an early pick on Hamler. This receiver class is deep, so he could be available in the second round, although a trade up a few spots could be in order as well.
With holes at cornerback and a need for a long-term safety, the Cowboys might not be ready to try and make a flashy pick. Still, it’s fun to think about what Hamler can do in Kellen Moore’s offense.
