Khalid Kareem. DE. player. Pick Analysis. Pick 101. Scouting Report. Round 3. 819

Pick via Seahawks

Dallas is back on the clock for a second time in the third round and now, they decide to get some help on the edge by taking Notre Dame’s Khalid Kareem at No. 101 overall. However, Kareem might not be the only addition to the defensive line this year.

That extra addition could be a returning player, who missed all of last season — Randy Gregory. Thanks to some changes to their punitive approach to marijuana in the new CBA, the NFL could finally reinstate Randy Gregory, who missed all of last season due to a suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. It has been well-documented that Gregory has had a hard time avoiding marijuana and now that the league has softened their stance, he could be back on America’s Team.

Should that rumor become reality, the Cowboys would be more than happy to have No. 94 back in action. While they replaced him in 2019 with Robert Quinn — who led the team in sacks — Dallas lost Quinn in the offseason as he signed a big contract with the Chicago Bears.

Having said all that, the Cowboys have operated in the past as if Gregory is not on the roster, and they take any contribution from him as a sort of bonus. That should still be the mindset here, which is why they decide to look for depth in the draft by selecting Kareem with the pick they added in their earlier trade with Seattle.

Kareem had 108 tackles and 13 sacks for the Irish in his three seasons. He’s not being praised as an overly explosive player but he has ideal size and length and can be a disruptive player on the edge. As a rookie, he likely will be a rotational defensive end behind Tyrone Crawford and DeMarcus Lawrence but he has the potential to replace Crawford down the stretch.
