NFL Free Agency 2020: Grades for every team after first wave
Whenever Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell started trying to build a juggernaut through free agency by handing out massive contracts, we knew it was all going to come to an ugly end. And as it turns out, that ugly end was the 2020 offseason as they’ve been having somewhat of a fire sale in Jacksonville.
Being forced to trade highly talented players like Calais Campbell and A.J. Bouye is not good for the Jaguars and they may still deal Yannick Ngakoue as well after franchise tagging him. Moreover, handing out a big five-year deal to Joe Schobert was questionable at best, even if he’s a solid player, given their position.
Cards on the table, the only reason the Jaguars don’t get a failing grade was that they were able to dupe the Bears into giving them a fourth-round pick for Nick Foles. If not for that, a move in which many speculated they would have to pay with draft capital to unload the quarterback, it would be an untenable offseason for the Jags.
Once the Super Bowl champion Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Chris Jones, everyone knew that they weren’t going to have much flexibility to move this offseason. However, retaining Jones on the defensive line or even just being able to trade him — something that remains to be seen — is a huge win for this team as they head into a title defense. Essentially, that was the big move that needed to be made and they did it.
Meanwhile, Kansas City has made some nice moves on the margins, picking up Damien Williams’ option and re-signing Demarcus Robinson. And while their secondary now has holes after losing Kendall Fuller, this team is still in a solid position to head into the 2020 season as the favorites to win the Super Bowl, even if it’s been a relatively noise-less offseason to this point.
