3 Defensive ends Dallas Cowboys can still sign in free agency
By Randy Gurzi
1. Everson Griffen
There’s still no better fit in free agency for the Dallas Cowboys right now than Everson Griffen. The former Minnesota Vikings Pro Bowler is on the open market and has a few suitors that he can choose from — and Dallas has been mentioned as a possibility more than once.
Griffen would be a great signing because he still proved last season that he had a lot left in the tank. At 32 years of age, he recorded 41 tackles and eight sacks for the Vikings and was named to his fourth Pro Bowl in the past five seasons. The one exception was 2018 when he missed five games — although he still had 33 tackles and 5.5 sacks in that season.
The only reason he was let go in Minnesota was due to his contract, as they were inching closer to the salary cap and had to make some tough decisions. They reportedly continued to speak with Griffen, trying to bring him back on an affordable deal but the two sides couldn’t agree to terms and he’s now looking for a new home after spending the past 10 seasons with the team that drafted him in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft out of USC.
Griffen lining up opposite DeMarcus Lawrence would give Dallas a defensive end depth chart similar to what they had with Robert Quinn last season. Not only that but with Dontari Poe and Geral McCoy at the two defensive tackle positions, Dallas would boast its best defensive line in recent memory.
No player makes more sense than Griffen, and the Cowboys would be wise to see what it would take to bring him in this season.
