The Dallas Cowboys still need to lock up Dak Prescott, but once that’s done they will still have some players who need to be extended in the near future

For the past two offseason, the Dallas Cowboys news cycle has centered around contract extensions that need to be done. Last year, it was running back Ezekiel Elliott and linebacker Jaylon Smith who landed the big contracts.

Smith’s was quiet and came unexpectedly. He even took a little less than it was expected he could get on the open market, but he was still happy to have the long-term security and stick with the team that took a gamble on him in 2016 when he came into the NFL with questions about his knee and if he could ever play at the same level he did at Notre Dame.

From there, it was Zeke who had a long and public holdout. With two years left on his deal, Elliott wanted the Cowboys to pay him before he wore his body down and they ended up budging.

This year, it was Amari Cooper and Dak Prescott that they wanted to extend. Cooper ended up getting done but Dak is on the franchise tag with talks stalled. Surely, they will end up figuring it out but their work won’t be done there.

As soon as he is signed, they’re going to have to start more negotiations, with these three players most likely to get the ones they start discussions with.

Honorable mention: Jourdan Lewis, CB

Jourdan Lewis has been a solid player for the Cowboys since they drafted him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He’s started just 13 games for them and former defensive backs coach Kris Richard seemed to be reluctant to use him more often.

Even with the limited snaps, he continued to be one of the few Dallas corners that could generate turnovers, recording four picks and three fumble recoveries in his first three seasons.

While he has been a solid player, he gets the honorable mention here simply because we have yet to see the team value him the way they should. Hopefully that can change in 2020, because Lewis is the type of player this secondary needs to keep.
