3. Don’t reach for a non-quarterback

While I believe trading up for a quarterback is smart, I don’t think it is wise to reach for a non-quarterback. I’ve always felt the draft is like a lottery and, at times, it is better to have quantity over quality. The Dolphins already have a lot of quantity, but they don’t need to trade up unless they can get a sure-fire prospect like Chase Young or Isaiah Simmons.

Last year, there were six trade-ups for non-quarterbacks in the first round. While some made a notable impact, most of them did not provide the level of contribution necessary to justify their additional draft cost. It may feel great to grab another prospect by trading up, but the Dolphins are not in a position where they need one player to compete for a title.

Despite their impressive free agency period, the Dolphins are still a rebuilding team. They have needs all over the roster and they can’t afford to waste valuable draft capital in the hopes of grabbing a slightly better prospect.

The Dolphins need capable bodies on the field more than they need one or two impact players, so reaching for a position other than quarterback would be a mistake.
