New York Jets stockpile talent in 7-round 2020 mock draft
By Randy Gurzi
Last season, the New York Jets won the Le’Veon Bell sweepstakes but then things got weird. Not long after signing him following his 2018 holdout, reports surfaced that head coach Adam Gase wasn’t a fan of the move. Things got more interesting when general manager Mike Maccagnan was let go and Gase received more responsibility.
Once that happened, the rumors swirled of Bell’s availability on the trade block. Nothing ever materialized but he also didn’t have the impact the Jets hoped for. Bell finished with 789 yards and three touchdowns while averaging just 3.2 yards per carry — a career-low. He did have 461 yards receiving on 66 catches but that won’t do much to slow the rumors.
Whether it’s due to wanting to move on or just get a capable backup, the Jets are likely to land a running back in this draft class. In this mock, they wait until Round 6 to address the position as they land a decent reserve option in Joshua Kelley from UCLA.
Kelley has good size at 5-foot-11 and 212-pounds and put p 2,303 yards in his two seasons with the Bruins. A JUCO transfer, Kelley is a physical runner who can help the Jets field a capable running back stable.
The Jets ended up getting a solid return on investment in veteran addition Ryan Griffin at tight end. He finished his first season in New York with 320 yards in 34 receptions with five touchdowns. He’s a solid pass-catching tight end but will be 30-years old in 2020, meaning they can use some youth.
With their final pick, they add Memphis tight end Joey Magnifico. Much like Griffin, Magnifico is a receiving tight end who averaged 15 yards per catch and had 12 touchdowns in his collegiate career. He should give them some depth and buy them time to look for a better option in future drafts.
