4. Strong Safety

Current strong safeties on the roster: Deon Bush, Jordan Lucas

The Chicago Bears signed Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to try to give them a strong duo at safety. To accommodate him, the coaches moved All-Pro free safety Eddie Jackson to strong safety.

While Jackson had a good season (he made it to the Pro Bowl once again), it wasn’t the dominant season that he had during his first two seasons in the league. Clinton-Dix also played well, but the duo just didn’t end up being as dominating as the team expected.

Clinton-Dix left through free agency, and it looks as if the Bears will move Jackson to his familiar free safety position to dominate again. They signed re-signed Bush and Lucas. They’ll compete for a starting job but ultimately they aren’t starting-caliber players. Who knows, though, they might surprise and win the starting job.

For those players to get a chance to start there needs to be competition. For that to happen the Bears need to draft someone who could start. Have the three compete, and the best one becomes the starter. Much like the kicker’s situation last season, the competition should bring out the best in them.

Prospects to target: Grant Delpit comes from DBU, aka the National Champions, aka LSU. He played in a number of different positions, both at free and strong safety. He measures in at 6-2 and weighs 215 pounds. If he gains a few more pounds he’ll be great at strong safety.

Another safety who gives the Bears flexibility is Southern Illinois’ Jeremy Chinn. He had a great week at the Senior Bowl and impressed teams during his interview sessions. Defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano could use him as a hybrid linebacker and safety who can line up in different positions.
