Chicago Bears: 5 Biggest needs in 2020 NFL Draft after free agency
1. Quarterback
Current quarterbacks on the roster: Mitchell Trubisky, Nick Foles, Tyler Bray
Some feel that with the acquisition of Foles the Chicago Bears are finished looking at quarterbacks. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes, they have two good options at the top (though some say there are two backup-level players at the top) without having to pay a lot of money.
The problem is that, in 2021, they could be without either of them on the roster. Foles has the opportunity to void the last two seasons of his contract and become a free agent. Additionally, the Bears have a decision on Trubisky’s fifth-year option. If they decline it, he becomes a free agent in 2021 as well.
If those two things happen, then the Bears need to have someone step in and take over. Bray is not the answer. He’s basically a scout team player and won’t be much of a player in real games.
That means the Bears need to draft someone. They could use one of their second-round picks to get a quarterback and he’ll be able to sit and learn in 2020. The quarterback situation is good for 2020 so whoever they draft doesn’t have to worry about having to play meaningful snaps this season.
Prospects to target: As what happens in nearly every draft, there will be a run on quarterbacks early in the draft. Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert, and Jordan Love will go in the top half of the first round so there is no way the Bears get there to pick one.
There are several options in the second round, however. Jalen Hurts, Jake Fromm and Jacob Eason are some of the prospects on the level behind the ones I mentioned earlier. There is also Florida International quarterback James Morgan, whose draft stock is rising higher every week. Several teams, including the Bears, met with him and expressed interest in drafting him. In fact, the Bears first met with Morgan at the East/West Shrine game and met again with him later.
Even if Foles or Trubisky is on the roster in 2021, if the Bears draft someone in this draft, they’ll have a good backup. Having Foles or Trubisky on the roster can happen but it isn’t feasible to have both on the roster. The prospect they get this year will be in a good position to back up in 2021 and eventually can step in as the starter.
