2020 NFL Draft: Dark horse teams to address each position early
Safety: Indianapolis Colts
It’s rare for teams to place a priority on having a dynamic safety tandem. Given the position seldom has the responsibility of playing man-to-man, many teams try to find an athletic fit at the position that can cover the back-end and make tackles. Yet, the teams who have two great safeties immediately see a noticeable difference in their pass defense.
The Indianapolis Colts already have one great safety on the roster in Malik Hooker. Hooker, whom the Colts drafted with the 15th overall pick in the 2017 draft, has been a mainstay of the Indianapolis defense and has put up impressive numbers in his career.
Yet, his teammates at the position have left much to be desired; the other three safeties on the Colts’ current roster combined for one pass defensed and no interceptions in 2019.
Although the Colts drafted Khari Willis in the fourth round last year and have a host of other needs, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them select a talented safety with an early pick. A prospect like Xavier McKinney or Antoine Winfield Jr. would immediately boost their 23rd ranked pass defense and take pressure off cornerbacks Rock Ya-Sin and Kenny Moore. It’s not a pressing need, but the Colts could be a surprise to take a safety early on.
