2020 NFL Draft: Dark horse teams to address each position early
Tight End: Los Angeles Chargers
There are only several teams that roster an elite tight end, but the Los Angeles Chargers are one of the lucky few. Despite missing four games last season, Hunter Henry caught 55 passes for 652 yards and five touchdowns, finishing in the top-10 among tight ends in several categories.
Even though Henry is returning for another season on the franchise tag, the Chargers are a dark horse team to spend a premium pick on the position.
First off, Henry will be a free agent once again following the 2020 season; after Austin Hooper received the most guaranteed money in the league this offseason, Henry will assuredly demand a more lucrative contract as he’s had similar production to Hooper during his career. In fact, four tight ends on the Chargers roster are entering the final year of their deals.
Second, the Chargers don’t necessarily have many needs outside of quarterback. They may need some reinforcements at offensive tackle and cornerback, but their signings of Bryan Bulaga and Chris Harris Jr. made those positions less of a priority.
They obviously won’t grab a tight end with their first-round pick, but I can see Los Angeles being the first franchise to pull the trigger on a tight end like Hunter Bryant or Cole Kmet.
