Dallas Cowboys trade down and secure an edge in 7-round 2020 mock draft
By Randy Gurzi
There was a time when it looked as though the Cowboys had to take a safety with the No. 17 pick. They had spent the past two seasons with Xavier Woods and Jeff Heath as the two starters and that wasn’t getting it done. This season, Woods is still there and Heath is gone but they finally addressed the spot in free agency.
Dallas surprised fans when they added Ha Ha Clinton-Dix on a one-year deal which gives them a proven ballhawk in the secondary. Clinton-Dix should line up at free safety as he’s a true centerfielder and Woods will slide into strong safety.
With each of them on contracts that expire after this season, there’s nothing that keeps Dallas from drafting a safety early. And if that happens to be the best player on the board for them early on, they should do so. However, in this draft, it didn’t line up but they still add some talent as they go back to Utah for another secondary player in Julian Blackmon.
Blackmon recorded nine interceptions over the past three seasons for Utah and had a pick-six in each of his past two seasons. He could provide Dallas a developmental player who can compete with Donovan Wilson for snaps at safety down the road.
