2020 NFL Mock Draft: Redskins make QB splash, Giants grab star receiver
By Randy Gurzi
The past couple of offseasons have belonged to the Cleveland Browns. When John Dorsey took over at the end of 2017, he went out and overhauled the team’s roster. He got rid of many of the players his predecessor’s had added and added a lot of star power. Dorsey drafted Baker Mayfield, Denzel Ward, and Nick Chubb in the 2018 offseason and traded for Jarvis Landry.
His second act included him landing Odell Beckham, Jr. and Olivier Vernon via trades while signing former NFL rushing leader Kareem Hunt. However, his inattention to the left tackle position and bet on Freddie Kitchens as head coach led to his departure this offseason.
With him gone, they returned to some of the front office from before with the hiring of Andrew Berry who had spent time with Sashi Brown’s analytical group in Cleveland. Berry then proceeded to add more talent as he signed Austin Hooper, Jack Conklin and Karl Joseph, among others.
What he hasn’t done yet, is sign a left tackle. With that being the case, it makes it hard to see the Browns go in any other direction at the No. 10 pick in this year’s draft. Desperate for someone to keep Baker Mayfield upright, Berry selects Andrew Thomas from Georgia who is perfect for the job.
Thomas is the most pure left tackle in this class playing the position for years for the Bulldogs. He doesn’t have the same athleticism or freakish size of Tristan Wirfs or Mekhi Becton, but Thomas is technically sound and will hold down the job with little hiccups for the next 10 years or longer.
