2020 NFL Mock Draft: Redskins make QB splash, Giants grab star receiver
By Randy Gurzi
There’s little doubt that the Los Angeles Chargers will be going after a quarterback in this draft. They recently parted ways with Philip Rivers, who has started every game for them since taking over from Drew Brees back in 2006. Now with the Indianapolis Colts, Rivers is looking forward to life after the Bolts. As for the Chargers, they’re currently looking at Tyrod Taylor as their starting quarterback.
While Taylor has expressed confidence in himself, he’s been in this position before. He was the starter for the Buffalo Bills for three seasons and compiled a record of 22-20. He was traded away before the 2018 season and joined the Cleveland Browns as their starter.
Once there, he made it through two and a half games before Baker Mayfield took over and never gave the job back. Now after a season of backing up Rivers, the 10th-year veteran will look to take over but as we have seen in the past, he’s often the bridge-starter while his team looks for their next franchise quarterback.
The same happens here as Los Angeles grabs Justin Herbert with the No. 6 overall pick in the draft. Herbert has everything a team needs in their starting quarterback from the arm strength to his mobility down to the intangible leadership qualities. The only question left is whether or not he can beat out Taylor right away or if he will have to patiently wait for his turn.
