4. Grant Delpit, S, LSU

Miami traded away eventual All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Steelers for a first-round pick. Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft is key to taking a plug-and-play safety with a high ceiling. The best option for the Dolphins is LSU safety Grant Delpit.

Although he’s not the same prospect, Delpit shares similar qualities to Fitzpatrick. However, part of the reason Delpit isn’t a first-round prospect is due to some inconsistencies on his junior season tape. LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini trusted the 6-2, 213-pound safety to perform several tasks and he excelled, which makes him a great fit in aqua and orange.

The former Tiger has excellent length, quickness, twitch and mirroring skills ideally suited as a big nickel or in the box against tight ends. He won’t be a liability when he’s asked to play as an extra backer either. While he does tend to miss tackles, he’s a downhill missile who plays fast and strikes ball carriers.

Delpit doesn’t have ideal hip fluidity, but offers potential as a single-high safety. He’s at his best in two-deep coverage, however. He takes away half the field thanks to his IQ and athleticism. Delpit is a dynamic weapon for a defense like the Dolphins with untapped potential. There are a few other options in this thin class, such as Kyle Dugger, Jeremy Chinn and Antoine Winfield Jr.
