Round 3: Antonio Gibson, Memphis

Memphis do-it-all running back Antonio Gibson hasn’t received the hype he deserves. It’s likely because he didn’t come on until late in his college career. During his senior season, the Tigers used him as a utility player — and he totaled over 1,700 all-purpose yards and 13 touchdowns. The majority of his production came from rushing and receiving.

As a back, he rushed 33 times for 389 yards and four touchdowns. Additionally, he caught 38 passes for 735 yards and reeled in eight touchdowns. The rest of his production came in the return game with 645 yards and a score.

Gibson was a Senior Bowl standout who showed he was coming along well as a runner. At the line of scrimmage, he’s still learning to process and press the line. However, he has excellent anticipatory skills that aids in scheme versatility. He’s decisive, sticks his foot in the ground and exploits creases. In the open field, he can break tackles, set up defenders and possesses home-run speed.

At the NFL Combine, Gibson showed off that speed with a 4.39-second 40-yard dash. The 6-0, 228-pound worked out with the wide receivers giving him a chance to show off what he offers as a wideout. Make no mistake about it, Gibson is a running back. A direct NFL comp for Gibson’s potential is David Johnson, who was also taken in the third round out of Northern Iowa.
