Round 4: Anthony McFarland Jr., Maryland

You can never have enough playmakers in the backfield. And when that player has track speed, it’s all the more enticing. Anthony McFarland Jr. is a value pick in the fourth round who brings the necessary speed you want in a complementary back. At the NFL Combine, he proved that with his 4.44-second 40-yard dash.

The 5-8, 208-pound running back has elite quickness that aids him at the line of scrimmage. He’s patient when pressing the line with quick feet to set up second-level defenders. He doesn’t have a lot of power. However, he does keep his legs moving and displays great contact balance.

There are concerns about his lower body strength when discussing pass protection. He offers potential as a route runner making him a valuable third-down option, however.

In the open field, he shows the ability to freeze defenders. He’ll set them up and blow past them. He’s a homerun threat who will work well in a one-two punch system. However, he could shock some with his big-play ability allowing to take over as the lead back in year two.

Drafting McFarland in the fourth round is a steal if he’s put in the right situation. The former Terrapins standout best fit will come from a zone-blocking scheme.
