Round 6: Joshua Kelley, UCLA

Teams looking for a power back will love Joshua Kelley. He’s a tenacious downhill runner who always fights for extra yards. The former UCLA back dominated for two seasons with back-to-back 1,000-yards campaigns. He carried the ball 454 times total while averaging 5.1 yards per carry during his two-year tenure as the feature back for the Bruins

He doesn’t offer much in terms of twitchiness at the line of scrimmage, making him scheme-specific. Backs like Kelley don’t always get drafted high, so it’s not surprising to see him fall this far. However, it doesn’t mean he can’t be a major player in an offense. His best fit comes in a power-gap scheme where he’s allowed to stick his foot in the dirt and go.

Kelley is a tenacious runner who absorbs contact. He doesn’t always run with the patience and agility you want when pressing the line. Don’t look for him to set up second-level defenders either. Instead, he’ll seek out his man and deliver the punishment.

He displays great contact balance and always falls forward. In short-yardage situations, he gets behind his pads, squares up and delivers. He had a solid combine performance running a 4.49-second 40 and showed soft hands aiding in his ability to contribute on third downs.

The 5-11, 212-pound back is a tone-setter thanks to his running style. He’s an early-down back who can contribute to a multi-back system that needs more physicality.
