New York Giants: Options abound, clarity not with No. 4 pick
There is no shortage of options for what the New York Giants could do with the No. 4 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. There is also little clarity as of now.
Sitting pretty with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the New York Giants have a bevy of options before them. With Joe Burrow expected to go No. 1 to the Bengals and Chase Young after him to the Redskins at No. 2, the only bit of uncertainty is what the Lions will do with the third pick. After that, any player they desire should be in play.
After finishing 4-12 last season, the Giants have clear needs on both sides of the ball at multiple spots. And one of their primary options could be to take the offensive tackle of their choosing to protect quarterback Daniel Jones and pave the way for running back Saquon Barkley. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, they could be in on Alabama tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. as there is reportedly growing buzz that he could to Big Blue.
At the same time, Giants general manager Dave Gettleman is leaving all doors open when talking publicly. On Friday, he told Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News that he is still open to trading back from the No. 4 pick “for the right offer”.
But if that weren’t enough confusion, check many mock drafts right now and you’ll see the Giants taking Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons, a player who could be a game-changing chess piece for a defense that lacks a bonafide stud currently.
What all of this buzz and speculation highlights is that the New York Giants hold a ton of cards in the 2020 NFL Draft. Taking Wills or Simmons at No. 4, in addition to trading back for another tackle or otherwise, are all viable and quality options for the long-term outlook of the franchise.
At the same time, it’s completely unclear what direction this team is actually leaning. That was the case last year when many thought the Giants were in on Dwayne Haskins but, instead, were targeting Jones with the sixth overall pick. Gettleman clearly values keeping the other 31 teams and the media guessing. And he’s doing a good job of that right now.
Frankly, we may not get clarity about the Giants’ plan for the No. 4 overall pick until Thursday, April 23 when the 2020 draft gets underway. The simple truth, however, is that they are in a situation where it’s hard not to make a move that will improve the team a great deal.
