Jacksonville Jaguars rebuild quickly in final 7-round 2020 mock draft
By Lucas Schuh
As the Jaguars defense has largely been torn apart, safety has never been a dominant spot for this unit. However, to get the defense back on track, they need to address the secondary. Ashtyn Davis won’t make those who want a box safety that happy as he lacks in run support. However, his premier ability in coverage is impossible to ignore.
Davis has freakish speed and range with track-star traits in the open field. He’s not a big player but he knows how to be physical, converting speed into power. He’s adept in coverage not just due to his speed but also his ability to flip his hips and transition without losing his speed. The Cal product can come in and help the secondary immediately with his coverage versatility that should help solidify the safety position.
Other Players Available: Malik Harrison, Jalen Hurts, Akeem Davis-Gaither
Ben Bartch deserves recognition as one of the small-school studs in the 2020 NFL Draft class. Outside of his odd protein shake, he’s not gotten a ton of love in the draft cycle on a national scale. However, he’s a legitimate NFL talent out of St. John’s in Minnesota. He has vice grips for hands and can stop rushers on contact but also has the quickness to recover if he’s knocked off.
Perhaps the biggest moment this offseason for Bartch was the Senior Bowl. While many questioned his level of competition, he answered that in Mobile by emerging as one of the standouts against some of the top prospects in the country. Bartch could potentially be an upgrade over Cam Robinson, who has been fine but inconsistent thus far for the Jags.
Other Players Available: Lynn Bowden Jr., Darnay Holmes, Dane Jackson
While the Jaguars added Josh Allen in the first round last year, the days for Yannick Ngakoue in Jacksonville are numbered. They need a replacement but, if they don’t address it early, they need to find the right guy to get return on their investment. Trevis Gipson out of Tulsa could be the right prospect.
Gipson is not built to be an impact starter in the NFL due to his build but he does play with incredible bend that allows him to stay balanced and work past bigger opponents. He has some bad reps on tape but, frankly, he was often used improperly in college. Gipson is not a perfect prospect but, with time to develop, he could be a long-term asset.
Other Players Available: Joe Bachie, Julian Blackmon, Quintez Cephus
