QB. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. 5. player. 59. Alabama. Tua Tagovailoa

The Pick: Well, well, well. I’ll spare the reasoning behind this pick because it’s well-known how connected Miami has been to Tua Tagovailoa. They also need a quarterback. Honestly, I’m going with my gut on this one. If this is the case, then the Dolphins’ brass orchestrated one of the greatest smokescreens in draft history. If they have concerns about Tagovailoa’s durability, then they can sit him in favor of Ryan Fitzpatrick or Josh Rosen (if he’s still around) for a season.

Alternative Picks: There is a lot that can happen here. Prominent people are saying it’s Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert. I think Tagovailoa has higher upside, though Herbert might be safer. I have so many thoughts about this pick that I’m just throwing up some listed options instead:

  1. Miami trades up for a quarterback, if they really like one OR
  2. Miami successfully convinces everyone they’re not taking a lineman, so their coveted quarterback falls into their laps OR
  3. Miami picks a lineman and moves back up for a quarterback.

I’m more torn between Herbert or Tagovailoa. All signs lately have pointed to Herbert, but before that all signs pointed to Tagovailoa. Is it all a smokescreen? Have the Dolphins accidentally leaked their draft plans? Purposefully? There’s so much uncertainty with this pick, though one thing is certain.

With 14 picks, this team can control the draft. Don’t worry, I’ll have more on the Dolphins soon. (Maybe sooner than you think?) Whatever Miami does, it could drastically impact a franchise that sorely needs some wins.
