2020 NFL Draft: 5 Teams with the most at stake
4. Miami Dolphins
The tenure of the Miami Dolphins front office certainly isn’t at stake, as the organization has committed to a complete rebuild under Brian Flores and Chris Grier. The Dolphins have accumulated a massive amount of draft capital, with 14 total picks in this year’s draft and nine selections in the 2021 draft. However, those selections did not come without a price.
The Dolphins traded away a great deal of veteran talent to acquire their draft capital, including Laremy Tunsil, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Ryan Tannehill, and Kenny Stills. Due to their transactions, Miami fielded one of the least talented rosters in 2019, ranking near the bottom of the league in every major category.
While solid wins over playoff teams like the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots towards the end of the year bought them some good grace, they were still bereft of capable talent.
This draft is critical for Miami’s success, as they bet their entire future on these next two incoming rookie classes. Miami needs to hit on a majority of their draft picks, especially at the quarterback position, if they want to get out of the AFC East’s basement.
They aren’t too high on this list, mainly because they have two first-rounders and two second-rounders in 2021 to make up for any mistakes. Nonetheless, the Dolphins regime will be entirely judged on how they perform in this current draft. If they fail, their leash could get a lot shorter.
