While the Dallas Cowboys wanted to shore up their defense, they were unable to resist the temptation of Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb at No. 17

The Dallas Cowboys are in the midst of a regime change this offseason as they allowed head coach Jason Garrett’s contract to run out and replaced him with Mike McCarthy.

A former Super Bowl-winning coach with the Green Bay Packers, McCarthy brings a breath of fresh air that was desperately needed, and the offensive-minded coach already had some great weapons to work with.

On Thursday night, he got another big one as the Cowboys took CeeDee Lamb at No. 17 overall — which was a bit of a surprise selection. Leading up to the draft, it was all but certain that Dallas was going to shore up their defense as they needed to replace cornerback Byron Jones and edge rusher Robert Quinn.

Names such as LSU edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson and Clemson cornerback A.J. Terrell were thrown around as possible picks and while Terrell went one selection before Dallas was on the clock, Chaisson was still there waiting to hear his name called.

However, Dallas was unable to resist the temptation that Lamb presented them. A legit outside weapon, Lamb recorded 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Sooners last season on 62 receptions (an average of 21.4 yards per grab). He’s not just a burner either as he recorded a lot of those yards by racking things up after the catch.

Dallas will still need to do something at defensive end, cornerback, and possibly safety but it’s hard to argue that this wasn’t the best value on the board.

Not only that, but putting Lamb on the same field as Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup gives the Cowboys one of the best wide receiver corps in the entire NFL.

For the Cowboys, they now wait until Pick No. 51 to make their next pick, so barring a trade, they will be done until Round 2.
