Green Bay Packers: 5 Late-round gems to consider in 2020 NFL Draft
By Joe Kipp
Michigan offensive tackle Jon Runyan fits the profile of developmental offensive lineman the Packers have gambled on in the past in the middle rounds. David Bakhtiari, T.J. Lang, Corey Linsley, Josh Sitton and others are all examples of Pro Bowl-caliber (and in some cases, All-Pro-caliber) linemen that the Packers have found in the fourth or fifth round.
Runyan fits the athletic thresholds the Packers like and has the experience to back it up. He ran a time of 5.07 in the 40-yard dash, had 24 reps on the bench press and finished with a 7.57 three-cone time at the NFL Combine.
The Packers could likely draft Runyan in the sixth round. Here’s what NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein had to say about the former Michigan Wolverine:
"“He’s inconsistent taking control into initial engagements, but stays after it and recovers back into the second phase of the block. … Runyan’s protection experience at tackle improves his draft value as a later-round, backup-caliber guard”"
At left tackle, Runyan was named first-team All-Big Ten in both 2018 and 2019. His father was a former Pro Bowl right tackle during his time in the league. Many analysts believe Runyan would be much better suited as a guard in the NFL due to his lack of size (6-4, 306 pounds).
