2020 NFL Draft: Grades for all 32 first-round picks
Grade: A+
Last season, the Arizona Cardinals fielded a subpar defense — and that’s putting it lightly. They knew upgrades were needed heading into 2020 and found the perfect answer during the draft. Yes, Isaiah Simmons was an excellent find for the Cardinals at No. 8.
In terms of value, Arizona couldn’t have asked for better than Simmons. Many tabbed him as a potential Top 3 talent in the 2020 draft class, with the potential to go as early as No. 4 overall. While that didn’t happen, it works out very well for the Cardinals, who now have a dynamic playmaker to toss into the mix on defense.
A hybrid linebacker/safety who fits the mold of today’s increasingly positionless game, Simmons has the speed, strength and athleticism to play anywhere within the Cardinals defense. He can step up and make big plays against the run and possesses enough agility and instincts to spend more time in coverage. The ceiling is extremely high for the former Tiger.
Fans were likely expecting an offensive tackle here, but I don’t blame them for not wanting to pass on a top-tier playmaker like Simmons.
