Day 2

Coming into the draft this year with just six picks, much like Day 1 on Thursday night, Day 2 was going to likely be relatively tame for the Atlanta Falcons. With the Falcons rolling with their original plan of having one second-round seelction and one third-round pick, Atlanta addressed its line on both sides of the ball with those two picks.

The Falcons went into round two with the No. 47 overall selection, a pick they used to draft defensive tackle Marlon Davidson out of Auburn.

Davidson is a large, nard-nosed defensive tackle that will bring some fire to the Atlanta defense this year and beyond. While playing more on the outside of the defensive line while in college, Davidson has the ability to be a solid option on the inside of the line for the Falcons if that’s where they decide to move him in his NFL career.

With their second and final selection on Day 2 on Friday night, the Falcons moved away from addressing their defensive needs to add a piece to the high-powered offense led by quarterback Matt Ryan and company.

With the No. 78 overall pick, Atlanta drafted center Matt Hennessy out of Temple, a player who will immediately have the chance to fill in and help provide protection for Ryan to be able to utilize the talented offense the Falcons contain.

With the selection of Hennessy, the Falcons got nice value for a center at that point in the draft. Alex Mack, who is getting up there in age and might be on his way out of Atlanta in the next year or so, might need a solid option behind him or alongside him in 2020, which is exactly what Hennessy has the ability to provide the Falcons with already in his rookie campaign. Hennessy should be able to step in and fill in wherever needed for Atlanta now and into the future.

Much like the first round of action for the Falcons, Day 2 and rounds two and three weren’t extremely flashy and Atlanta held pat with the selections it originally held, the Falcons get a Day 2 grade of B+ for the pair of picks.
