Atlanta Falcons: Grading each day of the 2020 NFL Draft
Day 3
Much like Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft on Friday night, the third and final day of the draft for the Atlanta Falcons was likely going to be a tame day and one that would result in not a lot of groundbreaking action by the Falcons.
Atlanta went into the final four rounds of the draft on Saturday slated to hold three of its overall six picks in this year’s draft. The Falcons didn’t end up trading away any of those picks or adding any picks to the slate of selections here in 2020, ending up wrapping things up with six selections as planned throughout the course of the seven rounds.
On the final day of action in the draft, Atlanta had two picks in the fourth round and then wouldn’t end up selecting any players until the seventh and final round later on in the day on Saturday.
In the fourth round, the Falcons contained the 13th pick of that round (No. 119 overall) and the 28th pick of the round (No. 134), while rounding things out with the 14th pick (No. 228 overall) of the seventh round.
As far as players Atlanta was able to bring in Day 3, it continued to address needs on defense with the first two picks, drafting linebacker Mykal Walker of Fresno State and safety Jaylinn Hawkins of California, two areas of need for the Falcons coming into the draft. With the final pick at No. 228 in the seventh round, the Falcons went special teams and took punter Sterling Hofrichter out of Syracuse.
Although it’s obviously easier said than done when it comes to trades, it would have been nice to see the Falcons try and add at least one or two more selections in this year’s draft and perhaps select a player or two in the fifth or sixth rounds to follow up the pair of fourth-round selections via a trade, but they continued to stand pat with their picks as they had in prior rounds.
Overall, Atlanta was able to add some players in positions of need, but its inability to take full advantage of Day 3 and try and obtain another player or two in what was viewed as a deep draft gets them a grade of C on Saturday’s third and final day of the draft.
