Alabama. A+. CB. Trevon Diggs. player. 123. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis

The only way the CeeDee Lamb pick would have hurt the Cowboys is if they were unable to land a starting defensive player to replace one of their many losses. Taking K’Lavon Chaisson in Round 1 would have replaced Robert Quinn but they also needed to replace Byron Jones who left for the Miami Dolphins. There were no real options at 17 to replace Jones, although there was some belief the Cowboys were considering Trevon Diggs there but didn’t have a high enough grade.

Thankfully, he was still on the board when they came back on the clock at No. 51. With that being the case, it seemed as though Dallas wasted no time at all in making the choice and they called Diggs, who was overly emotional at the news — while celebrating with brother Stefon Diggs of the Buffalo Bills.

Trevon Diggs gives Dallas a defensive back with elite size at 6-foot-1 and 205-pounds and excellent ball skills. A former receiver himself, he understands the routes he’s defending very well and quickly turns into a pass-catcher himself on contested balls.

For years, the Cowboys have needed someone in the secondary that can generate turnovers. They also have avoided Alabama players for some reason while every other team drafts them at a high rate. Suddenly, that’s not the case as they went for a Crimson Tide draft pick early on and also added a guy who knows how to take the ball away.

It’s hard not to love this pick, even if you wanted them to keep Byron Jones. Dallas took a risk there and they ended up doing well for themselves.
