Round 7, No. 249 Overall: Thaddeus Moss, TE, LSU

Original Pick: Brian Cole II, SS, Mississippi State

Obviously this is largely driven by the Moss connection. For those of you who don’t know, Thaddeus Moss is the son of former Vikings legend Randy Moss. While not nearly as talented of a player, he worked his way onto the NFL radar during LSU’s National Championship run in January.

It would have been awesome to see Minnesota snag Moss right at the end of the seventh round. Not only would it be a nod to the legend that captivated fans for so many years, but it also wouldn’t have been the worst pick from a talent standpoint.

Yes, tight end is not a need for the Vikings. They’ve already got the top three spots locked up between Kyle Rudolph, Irv Smith Jr. and Tyler Conklin. However, it doesn’t hurt to have a developmental talent at a position that the Vikings like to integrate regularly into the offense. A year or two on the practice squad could do wonders for a guy like Moss.

Instead, they grabbed Brian Cole II at No. 249 overall. While not the worst pick, the Vikings had already drafted a backup safety a round earlier in Michigan’s Josh Metellus. The latter offers more potential, albeit at an athletic disadvantage. Either way, I believe the Vikings would have been better off skipping the second safety and going for a guy who would have been a fan favorite.
