Round 7, No. 253 Overall: Trey Adams, OT, Washington

Original pick: Kyle Hinton, G, Washburn

I get it — Rick loves his small-school, late-round guards. That’s totally fine, and I don’t think that the selection of Kyle Hinton was necessarily a bad move. However, if the Vikings were looking for long-term potential, I believe there was at least one better option.

In this case, I’m talking about Trey Adams.

The Washington offensive tackle was once seen as a potential first-round talent due to ridiculous size and athleticism. Unfortunately, a torn ACL in 2017 and numerous other injuries along the way saw his stock drop off a cliff. Adams only managed to see the field for Washington in their final four games of 2019, still earning All-Pac-12 honors along the way.

The potential there is worth the risk of spending one of the Vikings’ fourth seventh-round picks. Even if Adams never returned to form, he would have been a worthwhile project for a Minnesota front five that desperately needs an injection of starting-caliber talent.

Was Hinton a low-risk addition with potential? Absolutely. Would Adams have offered more long-term upside with the possibility of becoming a plus starter? Absolutely.
